What I Learned Installing Custom Garage Cabinets (Real Costs + Tips)

Garage cabinets cost about $1,000 to $4,000 for a set of ready-to-assemble steel or resin cabinets you install yourself, and about $4,000 to $15,000 for a professionally designed and installed custom system in a typical two-car garage. Full-wall, floor-to-ceiling systems with a workbench and premium finishes can run $20,000 or more. The biggest drivers are the material, how many linear feet of wall you cover, and whether you pay for design and installation.

Costs people forget

  • Countertops: butcher block or stainless worktops add $40 to $150 per linear foot.
  • Outlets and lighting: moving or adding outlets above a workbench and under-cabinet lights typically adds $300 to $1,000 in electrical work.
  • Wall prep: cabinets need solid backing. Unfinished stud walls may need plywood or drywall first.
  • Floor: if you plan to coat the floor, do it before the cabinets go in. See the garage floor epoxy cost calculator.
  • Overhead racks: ceiling storage racks run about $150 to $500 each installed and free up wall space for cabinets.

DIY or Professional Installation?

Ready-to-assemble cabinets are a reasonable weekend project for a handy owner with two people to lift wall units. The hard parts are finding and anchoring into studs, leveling base cabinets on a sloped garage floor, and hanging wall cabinets high enough to clear car doors and hoods. Professional installers usually charge $50 to $100 per hour, or include installation in the price of a custom system. Hire out if you are covering more than one wall, mounting heavy wall cabinets, or need the cabinets to fit around a water heater, panel or windows.

How to Plan Garage Cabinets

Garage with base cabinets, wall cabinets and a workbench
  1. Measure the space the cars actually need. Park, open the doors fully, and mark the floor. Standard base cabinets are 18 to 24 in. deep; in a tight garage, shallow 12 to 16 in. cabinets or wall-only storage may be the only option. Our garage size planner shows how much room cars and storage need.
  2. Keep cabinets off the floor. Wall-hung base cabinets or leveling legs keep water, salt and spills from wicking into the bottom panels and make the floor easy to sweep.
  3. Choose materials for your climate. In humid or unheated garages, steel, resin or sealed plywood outlast particleboard.
  4. Plan zones. Group tools, auto supplies, garden gear and sports equipment so the things you use weekly are at waist height and seasonal items go up high.
  5. Leave access. Keep the electrical panel, water heater, shutoffs and garage door opener disconnect clear. Most codes require 30 in. of clear width in front of an electrical panel.
  6. Get at least three quotes with the same layout, so you compare materials and labor rather than different designs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are garage cabinets worth the money?

Can I use kitchen cabinets in a garage?

Yes, and used or surplus kitchen cabinets are a popular budget option. Raise them off the floor on a frame or legs, seal any particleboard edges, and avoid them in very damp garages.

How long does installation take?

A professional crew installs most one- or two-wall systems in a day. Custom systems usually take 2 to 6 weeks from design to installation because the cabinets are built to order.
